Due to the Brazilian climate and the large acreage of soybean in Brazil, this fungal disease quickly reached epidemic proportions. The fungus is highly adaptable and as a result the three main groups of fungicides that are used to control ASR are less effective every year. This development will result in additional application cost for growers and an increased impact on the environment. For a durable, benign, integrated disease management strategy, resistant varieties are urgently needed. However, soybean germplasm is derived from a narrow genetic base, and extensive screening for useful resistance has yielded few candidate genes.

Bob Kemerait warned soybean growers that the risk for Asian soybean rust is worrisome in in part because of the mild winter weather. Kemerait said soybean rus twas found on April 7 on kudzu that survived the winter in Tattnall County. Early detection is an indication the disease could be a problem for soybean growers this year and they should plan accordingly. Asian soybean rust is potentially one of the most damaging diseases to affect soybean production in Georgia and elsewhere in the southeastern United States.

Alternative hosts such as kudzu, Florida beggarweed, and iron clay peas, allow the disease to survive and spread. This monitoring program, has proved to be a very effective tool for early detection of ASR.
