Fat Bike Race

IMG_1689.PNG

We have been getting a lot of questions on our NEW FatBike Race and we would like to give everyone our most up-to-date info on this event.

DISTANCE

Our longer, Great Lakes FATBIKE Series Race, or “main event”, is going to be in the 25-27 mile range.

Our FATBIKE Shorty will be around 15 miles.

(As with all outdoor events and especially snowsports, there may be minor changes made due to snow conditions or unforseen causes).

CLASSES

We are using the “keep it simple” approach and simply offering two classes, men’s and women’s, in each of the distances. Hopefully, as we grow in coming years, we will add more categories.

TRAIL LAYOUT

New! For 2016, The IronLine has the great fortune to incorporate a brand new community bike path called the Heritage Trail and utilize it to connect to a new back country trail section. This gives the FATBIKE Race its own, unique course completely separate from the sled dog course(s)! This will mean NO snow machine traffic on trails. WE HAVE ALSO BUILT A FATBIKE TRAIL GROOMER, So, “Pank ‘er down!”

1) Apple Blossom Community Footpath/Heritage Trail: pavement, but will give us a good surface for grooming and packed snow.

2) Wolftrack Nature Trails: wooded double track around Scott Lake, climbs, descents… only used in longer race.

STARTING AREA

Iron River RV Park
50 East Genesee St.
Iron River, MI 49935

Starting area contains our Mushers Village which will be home to some food vendors and hot coffee. Plus, there will be activities for the whole family, kids sled dog rides, and games. IronLine merchandise will also be available in the village. We encourage FATBIKE racers and their families to enjoy the sled dog race and overall community of Iron River.

PRE-RACE RIDERS MEETING

There will be a pre-race riders meeting at 9:30 before our 10:00am start on Saturday, January 30th. Meet at the A-Frame parking lot.

NO RIDERS ON COURSE BEFORE RACE

There will be 25-30 dog teams in the starting area and on the first 1.5 miles of trail, all morning. We would prefer we didn’t have any dog/FatBike entanglements. BUT…fatbikes and fatbikers ARE welcome in the spectator/village area!!!

FATBIKES ONLY

We will be making sure everyone’s tires stay fat! So, 3.7″ or bigger. However, there have been a couple questions about 29+, but the conditions probably won’t favor those.

RACE PURSE

We will have handmade trophies or awards made for top three men’s and women’s races in both categories. All riders will receive an IronLine pint glass for racing. So, no cash purse this year, just series points and a good time! Top finishers will also be invited to the Mushers/Winners Banquet.
